HOW TO RE-INSTALL WINDOWS 98 WITH THE UPGRADE CD

QUESTION

Normally when you re-install Windows 98 using the upgrade CD you have to first install Windows 95. This can take a long while to do. Is it possible to speed up this process without have to buy the full installation version of Windows 98?

ANSWER

Yes, believe it or not, it is possible and it's surprisingly easy to do. Make sure you have both the Windows 98 upgrade CD and the Windows 95 CD or floppies handy then use the following process:

  1. Don't bother installing Windows 95 first!
  2. Start the installation process directly from the Windows 98 upgrade CD
  3. Once the installation begins you will be prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD or floppy for what Microsoft terms 'compliance checking'. This is where Microsoft make sure you really do have Win95 in your possession.
  4. You will then be prompted to continue the clean install with the upgrade CD.

That's all there is to it! Not sure if this process works with other versions of Windows or not. If you have tried it then let me know by clicking here.
