 SLOW CONNECTION SPEEDS

Increasing a modems connection speed is generally a hard thing to fix and can be almost impossible to improve. Getting the latest drivers for the modem is one of the first things to try.

Turning down the maximum connection speed can sometimes help. Go to CONTROL PANEL > MODEMS > PROPERTIES > GENERAL TAB. E.G. If the connection is set at 115200 and you have a 56k modem then try changing it to 57600.

The problem could be the baud rate for the COM Port which isn't allowing you to reach top speed. To rectify this:

  1. Go to Control Panel and open System.

  2. Click the Device Manager tab and click the '+' sign next to PORTS(COM&LPT).

  3. Select the port your modem uses, click Properties then click the Port Settings tab.

  4. Set the Bits Per Second to 115200bps. 115200bps is the maximum setting for a standard COM Port. If you encounter any problems then try lowering this setting.
