HOW TO DETERMINE HOW FAST A MODEM IS CONNECTED

When a user looks at their connection speed, they may see one of two things. Either the speed that their modem is talking to the other modem (DCE) or the speed their computer is talking to their modem (DTE). Unfortunately many modems will report the modem to computer speed which is not very useful. If a speed of 38400, 57600 or 115200 is being shown, this is the modem to computer speed and tells nothing about how fast the modems are actually communicating at. The modem to computer speed should always be quicker than the modem to modem speed. If 19200 is shown then this can be either the modem to modem or the computer to modem speed as this is a valid speed for either one. Otherwise the speed shown will be the initial connection speed. End users can not see what speeds their modems change to during a call.

Valid speeds for V.34 connections are: 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 7200, 9600, 12000, 14400, 16800, 19200, 24000, 26400, 28800, 31200, 33600

Valid speeds for K56Flex connections are: 32000, 34000, 36000, 38000, 40000, 42000, 44000, 46000, 48000, 50000, 52000, 54000, 56000

Valid speeds for V.90 connections are: 28000, 29333, 30666, 32000, 33333, 34666, 36000, 37333, 38666, 40000, 41333, 42666, 44000, 45333, 46666, 48000, 49333, 50666, 52000, 53333, 54666, 56000.

Using the above, it is sometimes possible to tell which protocol is being used by the speed. For example, a 49333 connection would have to use the V.90 protocol. A 32000 connection would be K56Flex or V.90 but not V.34.
