THE PORT IS ALREADY OPEN
This usually means that
another piece of software is using the modem to either update itself or
dial up.
-
Look in the system
tray and disable any software that could be causing this (virus
checkers, firewalls, fax software, etc.)

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and
end task 'RNAAPP' if it is there and re-boot the PC.
-
Remove modem from
Control Panel>Modems and try re-installing.

THE DEVICE DOES NOT EXIST
This could indicate a
problem with hardware.

THE PORT WAS DISCONNECTED BY THE REMOTE MACHINE
This could indicate there
is a problem with the server.

Check all DUN and
Network settings before hand.

Check for call waiting
(#43# to disable)

Check length of cable
from modem to phone socket. More than 3m can cause the signal to
degrade.

Is there Fax, Sky or
anything else connected to the line. If so, try removing them and
then re-connecting.

Go to Control Panel
> Modems slect properties, select connnection tab, click Advanced
button, in extra settings enter S10=50
-
Remove TCP/IP and
re-install, maybe also remove and re-install DUN

There may be a problem
with the hardware installed on the computer.

is a problem with the server.

The line is actually
busy - try to dial the number through a conventional phone to see if
you get the engaged tone.

THERE IS NO DIAL TONE

Check connections
between phone socket and computer.

Check line for call
barring
-
Plug a working phone
into the phone socket that you use for the modem and check for a
dial tone. If there is none then there is a problem with the phone
service or the wiring.

If the modem is an
external modem then check that it is turned on.
-
Verify that "Wait
for dial tone before dialling" option is enabled. To do this go
to START / SETTINGS / CONTROL_ PANEL / MODEMS / PROPERTIES. Click on
the Connection tab and select the wait for dial tone before dialling
check box. Click OK and close.

Verify that there are
no other running programs using the modem. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and
END TASK any programs that may use the modem.
LEAVE EXPLORER AND SYSTRAY !!

Try a different cable.
-
Add two or three
commas before the number to be dialled. This will allow the dialler
to bypass any beeps caused by automated voice messaging.
