One way to avoid a lot of the problems is to
first of all install I.E. version 5.01 and then try upgrading to
version 5.5. If it still does work then you can easily revert back to
version 5.01.

Before upgrading Internet Explorer you
should do the following :-
- Turn off all system utilities such as
Antivirus, Crashguard, Norton Utilities, etc.
- If you use Gator then make sure you have
the latest version from www.gator.com.
- Turn off any 'download helpers' such as
GetRight or Gozilla as they are incompatible with the MSN download
site.
- Clean out Temporary Internet Files and
clear History to remove any corrupted files.
- Run Scandisk on full with surface scan
and then Defragment the hard drive.
